Course Content

Technical Training Sessions

The technical training sessions are the core of the course. These sessions will, as the name suggests, be more technical, detailed and above all practical with a focus on “how-to” rather than just “what you should do”. The sessions are organised into modules that will be offered during the morning and afternoon for a period of one week so that participants will attend a total of four courses over the course of two weeks. This means that graduates from the AMI will have the ability to apply four practical tools to improve the performance of their organisations upon their return. Courses on offer will include:

Plenary Sessions

The plenary sessions will be presented by industry leaders drawn from the faculty and leading institutions in Ghana. The plenary presentation/ discussion would address a theme or topic that will be presented via a keynote speech or panel presentation with Q&A following the presentation/s. The content of these sessions will address key issues facing the microfinance sector in Africa. These sessions are designed to broaden participants' perspective on the industry, its possibilities and its challenges.

Plenary session topics will include:

  • A Market-led Approach to Serving the Low Income Segment
  • Best Practice Corporate Governance
  • The Impact of the Global Financial Crisis on Microfinance
  • Rural Banks
  • Delivery Channel Innovations in Microfinance
  • Cooperatives
  • Models to reach the ‘unreached’ in the Rural/Remote Areas
  • Financial Education
  • Savings Mobilization – Key Issues for MFIs to Consider

Moderated Presentations/Discussions

The moderated presentation/discussions at the end of the day would be opportunities for invited speakers and participants to share their thoughts and experiences. These discussions will have specific themes and speakers or participants will present case studies from their own institutions and then the floor will be opened for questions, comments and discussion about the implications and application of the material covered during the day. Examples of themes that could be covered:

  • The ongoing transformation of WWB Ghana
  • The Equity Bank revolution
  • Sub-prime contamination and its potential effects on Africa
  • Consulting in microfinance
  • The success of Sinapi Aba Trust
