Understanding Remittance Networks in Punjab and Uttar Pradesh

Author:

This research explores the various remittance options currently available to Indian migrant workers in Punjab and recipient families in rural Uttar Pradesh. It also examines the benefits a business correspondent (BC) remittance service may provide to both. Findings include:

  • Remitters and recipients increasingly prefer the security and fast delivery bank transfers offer, although the doorstep service and short-term loans available via hawala and other informalcouriers retain strong appeal.
  • Urban remitters have more exposure to BC servicesso far, and some find them less intimidating andmore convenientthan bank branches.
  • Rural recipients appreciate the concept, but lack first-hand evidence or personal referrals to decide for or against BCs as a remittance alternative.
